SATURDAY 21st JUNE 2014

Today’s #BookADayUK is my summer read.

The Secret Dreamworld of a Shopaholic.

I read these books back in the summer of 2003; on the sea-view balcony, lounging on the beach and by the pool.

That was the year hubby and I went to Portugal for two weeks.

It was also the holiday that I packed fourteen pairs of shoes to take with me.

How very apt.

Book A Day Challenge UK: Day 20 – Favourite Cover – The Famous Five

FRIDAY 20th JUNE 2014

Today’s #BookADayUK is my favourite cover.

The Famous Five – Five on a Treasure Island

This was one of the first full novels I read as a child and that cover will stay with me forever.

This book is what awakened my reading and writing senses.

Never had I  craved adventure so much on bike rides with lashings of ginger beer until The Famous Five came into my life. Oh how I wanted to discover smuggler’s coves and pirates treasure.

Suppose there’s nothing stopping me now … I have a bike, I have ginger beer (normal and alcoholic too) and I live by the sea. Hmmmm …

Book A Day Challenge UK: Day 19 – Still Can’t Stop Talking About It – The Hunger Games

THURSDAY 19th JUNE 2014

Today’s #BookADayUK is one that I still can’t stop talking about.

The Hunger Games.

I told you it would feature again. I’m not even sorry.

Recommended to me back in February 2012 by my lovely friend Andy Wright (who kindly let me borrow the book) I inhaled the whole story in a couple of days. You can even catch the urgent blog post I so desperately needed to write the morning after here.

The story has remnants of Stephen King’s ‘The Stand’ – which I read in August 2011 (catch my post here). Again, another Andy Wright read.

Both stories are tales of ‘What if’s?’

What if you don’t read these books?

I’ll tell you my fellow book lover – you are truly missing out.

Book A Day Challenge UK: Day 18 – Bought on a recommendation – The Accident

WEDNESDAY 18th JUNE 2014

Today’s #BookADayUK is one that was bought on a recommendation.

The Accident.

There are so many I could have chosen from – The Hunger Games being one of them but it’s had its airtime (and may appear again! Shout out to Andy Wright for that recommendation).

My good friend Emma Buckton (shout out to Lady B!) downloaded The Accident and posted a lovely reading-my-kindle-in-the-garden pic to my FB page by way of suggestion.

After A.J. Fikry, there was the dark reading void, that follows upon completion of a good read, and that void needed to be filled.

The urge to read something else was satisfied by The Accident. Keep toot for a future blog post on this …

I know this is the second mention of Gabrielle Zevin’s book in my #BookADayUK  – it’s just that this book has buried itself so deeply in my mind that it makes it impossible for me to get over.

A beautiful story that book lovers will adore and I will definitely be reading this for years to come.

A future classic.

Book A Day Challenge UK: Day 16 – Can’t Believe More People Haven’t Read – The Undomestic Goddess

MONDAY 16th JUNE 2015

Today’s #BookADayUK is a book that I can’t believe more people haven’t read …

The Undomestic Goddess

It’s another Sophie Kinsella classic – up there with her shopaholic series.

Another book that will make you laugh out loud – and make you feel less guilty for not doing your housework or baking a cake.

Book A Day Challenge UK: Day 15 – Favourite Fictional Father A.J. Fikry

SUNDAY 15th JUNE 2014

Today’s #BookADayUK is very apt with it being Father’s Day – favourite fictional father …

A.J. Fikry.

Not an obvious choice by most accounts but it’s a book I read only recently and one that really nuzzled deep inside my head – and my heart.

A.J. Fikry’s story is simply wonderful; his journey through fatherhood is a beautiful and heart warming one – sprinkled with collective stories and notes for his child.

It truly is a delight to observe his character transition and adaptation after he is catapulted into fatherhood without warning.

If you are a book lover, I can’t express how much you need to read this book (more on that in another blog post).

Book A Day Challenge UK: Day 14 – An Old Favourite – Nancy Drew

SATURDAY 14th JUNE 2014

Today’s #BookADayUK is an old favourite.

Nancy Drew.

This one’s a bit of a cheat as there is no specific book just the Nancy Drew series is an old favourite of mine.

Just one of a number of Nancy Drew books. Get your copy off Amazon - I'm considering re-reading these ...

Just one of a number of Nancy Drew books. Get your copy off Amazon – I’m considering re-reading these …

My grandparent’s had the old versions (which belonged to my mother from her childhood) tucked away in the wardrobe in the bedroom my sister and I shared when we visited them in Nottingham.

That wardrobe was a treasure trove of books.

As we would visit for longer spells over the summer holidays, I would sit in their garden and read Nancy Drew.

Often, once I had finished a book, so great the urge was to write my own that I would fling open a notebook and start scribbling away.

I don’t know what I’ve done with those notebooks but it would be interesting to find them and read what my younger imagination conjured up …

Book A Day Challenge UK: Day 13 – Makes Me Laugh – Bridget Jones

FRIDAY 13th JUNE 2014

Today’s #BookADayUK is a book that makes me laugh.

There’s a few of these that I could mention but my ultimate hoot-of-a-read is the classic Bridget Jones’s Diary.

I read this when I travelled on the bus to work at Northern Rock many moons ago.

I would chuckle away to myself as if I was the only person on that bus, with no attempt whatsoever to suppress the laughter tears – much to the surprise of my fellow passengers.

Of course very close contenders are Marian Keyes and Sophie Kinsella.

Book A Day Challenge UK: Day 12 – I Pretend To Have Read It – Harry Potter

THURSDAY 12th JUNE 2014

Today’s #BookADayUK is a book that I pretend to have read … gasp …

Harry Potter.

I’m so ashamed. My punishment is to be banished to my study to read for eternity.

Even worse is the confession that I only caught up with all the films last year.

Never mind.

More to add to the never-ending ‘To Read’ list. Another series which I think is a winter read (the other being my previous post on The Lord of The Rings), tucked up all snug with a cuppa and a blanket …
